Chapter 11 - THE EMPIRE THAT BEGAN TO FALL

Victoria Sterling was arrested.
Nathan Knox was taken into custody.
Arthur Sterling's cooperation exposed several additional financial schemes.
The investigation widened.
Companies were searched.
Accounts were frozen.
Executives were questioned.
And Christian Vance found himself facing the consequences of a legacy he had inherited but never fully understood.
His father had built the empire.
Christian had expanded it.
But beneath the legitimate businesses lay a network of corruption.
Some of it had continued under his leadership.
Even when he hadn't known every detail.
Christian could have tried to protect the company at all costs.
Instead, he made a different choice.
He cooperated with investigators.
Resigned from several executive positions.
Placed the companies under independent review.
And accepted that the truth might cost him billions.
The press called it a collapse.
His rivals called it weakness.
His former allies called it betrayal.
Christian called it necessary.
One evening, I found him sitting alone in his penthouse.
The city glittered beneath the windows.
He held a glass of water.
Not whiskey.
Not wine.
Just water.
"Bad day?" I asked.
He smiled faintly.
"Expensive day."
I sat beside him.
He looked toward the skyline.
"I lost three companies."
I winced.
"Three?"
"Possibly four."
I stared.
He laughed quietly.
"Don't look so horrified."
"That's a lot of companies."
"Apparently."
Silence.
Then he looked at me.
"Do you regret meeting me?"
I frowned.
"What?"
He took a breath.
"Your life was complicated enough before I entered it."
I considered him.
"My life was complicated before I was born."
He smiled sadly.
I continued.
"But you didn't create the truth."
He looked at me.
"You helped me find it."
His eyes softened.
I took his hand.
"And you didn't have to."
Christian stared.
Then whispered:
"I wanted to."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he leaned closer.
"Maya."
My heart raced.
"Yes?"
"Can I kiss you?"
I smiled.
"Finally."
He laughed.
Then kissed me.
Softly.
Carefully.
May you like
Without the arrogance I'd expected from a man like him.
And for the first time, the city outside his windows seemed less important than the quiet room around us.
