Chapter 9 - LILY SPEAKS

At seventeen, Lily chose to speak publicly.

Not about the details.

She was invited to a youth advocacy event on family violence and coercive control.

I offered to say no for her.

She said:

“Mom.”

“Right.”

Her choice.

Her speech began:

People kept asking why my mother didn't leave earlier.

I froze.

She continued:

I used to ask her too.

Audience silent.

Then I learned that leaving isn't a door. It's money, housing, custody, evidence, fear, pets, schools, family pressure, and wondering whether anyone will believe you.

My eyes filled.

I still wish we had left earlier. My mom does too. But wishing doesn't change the past. What matters is that when the moment came where she had to choose between protecting the image of our family and protecting me, she chose me.

I cried.

Completely.

Publicly.

Humiliating.

Afterward, Lily found me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

She smiled.

My daughter.

Then she hugged me.

Not because she had erased what I failed to do.

Because our relationship could hold truth without collapsing.

That was the family I wanted now.

Not perfect.

May you like

Safe enough for honesty.
