Chapter 8 - THE APOLOGY

Three years after the kitchen, Grant wrote Lily an apology.

Not his first letter.

The first ten were not apologies.

They were explanations.

Stress.

Childhood.

Anger.

Alcohol one night.

My “undermining.”

Lily's attitude.

Prison counselors apparently had patience I did not.

Then this letter arrived.

It began:

Lily, I used to think saying I lost control reduced my responsibility. It does the opposite.

I stopped.

She read beside me.

I did not lose control like someone dropping a glass. I made choices while angry. I told myself they were discipline because that word sounded better than abuse.

Lily's hands shook.

You did not cause it by talking back.

She began crying.

Not loudly.

You were allowed to disagree with me. You were allowed to refuse your phone. You were allowed to say I did not own you.

Then:

Your mother should never have needed courage to protect you from me. I should have been safe without requiring her courage.

I had to look away.

Finally:

I am sorry. You do not owe me forgiveness, visits, letters, or a future relationship. If the only safe thing I can give you is distance, then distance is what I will give.

Lily finished.

Folded it.

Then sat silently for almost ten minutes.

“What do you want to do?”

“I don't know.”

Good answer.

She put the letter in a drawer.

Didn't answer for nine months.

Then she wrote:

I believe you are sorry. I am not ready to see you. Both things can be true.

He replied once.

Yes.

No pressure.

May you like

That mattered.
