Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Beatrice and Julian

At 2:00 AM, the estate settled into a quiet, heavy stillness.
The master suite on the third floor was bathed in the warm, amber glow of a crackling limestone fireplace.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling balcony windows, wearing a soft silk robe, looking out at the moonlight dancing across the ripples of Lake Como.
Behind me, the door to the adjoining bath opened.
Luca stepped out wearing dark linen trousers, his chest bare.
In the firelight, the true map of his life was laid bare.
His broad torso was a tapestry of survival: two jagged bullet scars near his ribs from the ambush eight years ago, a long surgical incision along his shoulder, and the massive, powerful musculature of a man who had carried the survival of his people on his back.
He saw me looking, and for a fraction of a second, his shoulders flinched. He reached for a discarded shirt on the armchair.
"Don't," I said softly, crossing the hardwood floor on bare feet.
Luca froze as I reached him.
I reached out, placing my small palms flat against the warm, heavy muscle of his chest, right over his beating heart.
Thump-thump... thump-thump.
His heart was pounding with the force of a war drum.
"Sophia..." Luca whispered, his voice trembling with raw vulnerability. "I know what people call me in Milan. The Monster of Como. The Giant who breaks whatever he touches."
I looked up into his gray eyes, lifting my hand to gently trace the scar along his jawline.
"My father told me about the boy in the flour pantry," I murmured. "He said that when you were bleeding to death, you held your breath for two hours so the men outside wouldn't hear you and shoot the bakery."
Luca’s breath hitched.
"You don't break things, Luca," I smiled, stepping closer until my forehead rested against his collarbone. "You protect them."
Luca let out a deep, ragged sound—a sound of a man dropping twenty years of armor onto the floor.
His massive arms wrapped around me, pulling me up against his chest, burying his face into my hair, holding me with a fierce, reverent tenderness that made the whole world outside disappear.
BZZZ-BZZZ.
The encrypted tactical communicator on the nightstand pulsed with a frantic crimson light.

Marco’s voice burst through the speaker:
"Boss! Perimeter alarm on the lower docks! Armed contractors breached the boathouse and cut the power grid to the west gate!"
