Chapter 10 - Sunlight on the Baker's Terrace

Two years after that unforgettable wedding night, the warm summer sun cast shimmering golden rays across the turquoise waters of Lake Como.

The mountain breeze carried the sweet, heavenly aroma of freshly baked Sicilian cannoli, artisan lemon tarts, dark chocolate brioche, and the pure, joyful laughter of a child.

Built on the private waterfront terrace of the Moretti estate was Sophia’s Pasticceria & Cafe—a charming, sun-drenched bakery painted in soft cream and olive green, overlooking the private boat docks.

Inside, twenty local apprentices and pastry chefs were laughing as they rolled out fresh almond dough beneath copper chandeliers.

Sitting outside on the wide stone terrace, on a massive, custom-built teak armchair that comfortably supported his colossal frame, was Luca Moretti.

He wore a relaxed white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark trousers, and a pair of reading glasses, holding an Italian newspaper in one hand and an espresso in the other.

His face was completely relaxed, the dark shadows of loneliness and war erased forever from his features.

Footsteps echoed softly against the flagstones.

I walked out of the bakery kitchen wearing a flour-dusted linen apron over a cheerful yellow sundress, carrying a silver tray with two warm, fresh-from-the-oven vanilla croissants.

On my way to the table, my toe caught the edge of a flower planter.

Whoops.

I stumbled forward, the tray tilting dangerously.

Before a single crumb could touch the ground, a massive, warm hand caught my waist with effortless, lightning-fast precision, while his other hand steadied the silver tray.

Luca lifted me clean off my feet, pulling me down onto his broad lap with a deep, rumbling chuckle that vibrated straight through my ribs.

"Two years, mia cara," Luca murmured against my neck, kissing my temple with boundless devotion. "And you still fall for me every single day."

"I told you on day one," I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck and resting my forehead against his cheek. "I fall down constantly. It’s part of the package."

From the open French doors of the nursery, Elena walked out onto the lawn carrying our fourteen-month-old twin boys, Matteo and Leo.

The toddlers were strong, healthy, with dark curls and their father’s large, curious hazel eyes, laughing as they reached out their chubby little hands toward the lake.

"Daddy!" Matteo squealed, pointing at a passing wooden speedboat.

Luca’s face broke into a radiant, beautiful smile—a smile of a man who had conquered every shadow of his past and built an empire of unconditional love.

He reached over, scooping both of his sons into his massive arms, kissing their soft cheeks as they giggled and tugged at his linen collar.

I sat beside them on the warm teak bench, leaning my head against Luca’s broad shoulder, watching the golden sunshine dance across the deep blue waters of Como.

The cruel laughs, the paid rejections, the cold chapel aisles, and the dark shadows of betrayal were gone forever. Standing tall in the warmth of truth, surrounded by honor, prosperity, and unconditional love, we were finally whole—a giant and his baker, united forever in everlasting light, sweetness, and triumphant peace.
