Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE SAVED

Giovanni offered to pay off my student loans.
I refused.
He offered to buy me a larger apartment.
I refused.
He offered to hire a full-time nanny.
I refused that too.
Finally, he looked at me.
“Jessica, do you enjoy arguing with me?”
I smiled.
“Immensely.”
He laughed.
Then grew serious.
“I just want to make your life easier.”
I took his hand.
“I know.”
“Then why won't you let me?”
I considered my answer.
“Because I've spent five years proving I can take care of Lily.”
He nodded.
“And?”
“And I don't want to become dependent on someone again.”
Giovanni looked at me.
Then said quietly:
“I don't want you dependent.”
I blinked.
He continued.
“I want you happy.”
My throat tightened.
“Giovanni.”
He smiled.
“If that means you keep your job, your apartment, and your independence, then that's what we'll do.”
Tears filled my eyes.
He leaned closer.
“But I reserve the right to buy Lily ridiculous dinosaur toys.”
May you like
I laughed.
“That can be negotiated.”
