Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE AT THE FRONT DOOR

Two years after the storm, Lauren stood outside Hannah's house holding a small gift bag.
It was Maisie's eleventh birthday.
Inside were balloons.
Cake.
Friends.
Music.
Maisie opened the door.
“AUNT LAUREN!”
Lauren laughed.
“Happy birthday!”
Maisie hugged her.
Then looked into the bag.
“What's this?”
Lauren smiled.
“Open it.”
Inside was a small wooden box.
Handmade.
Painted pale yellow.
Maisie lifted the lid.
Inside lay a soft cloth pouch.
She opened it.
And gasped.
A new pair of yellow kitchen gloves.
Maisie stared.
Then looked at Lauren.
“Three stitches?”
Lauren nodded.
“Three stitches.”
Maisie began crying.
Lauren knelt.
“You don't have to use them.”
Maisie shook her head.
“I know.”
She hugged Lauren tightly.
Hannah watched from the doorway.
Her eyes filled.
Later that evening, after the guests left, Maisie placed the old gloves and the new ones side by side.
She smiled.
“One pair for remembering.”
Lauren nodded.
“And the other?”
Maisie looked toward the kitchen.
“For living.”
Lauren smiled.
And for the first time, the three black stitches represented something other than fear.
May you like
They represented survival.
And the promise that someone would always recognize her.
