Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH UNDER OATH

The investigation continued for months.

Federal prosecutors reviewed financial records.

Witnesses testified.

Former contractors came forward.

Dr. Harold Grace was charged in connection with the procurement scheme and the unlawful detention operation.

Admiral Richard Prescott faced serious federal charges after investigators linked him to the network.

Other participants were arrested.

The hospital underwent an independent investigation.

Its leadership changed.

New procedures were introduced to ensure that children presenting with urgent medical needs received immediate assessment regardless of their circumstances.

Dr. Brandt faced disciplinary consequences for recording and mocking a vulnerable child.

He later issued a public apology.

But the damage to his reputation was not the point.

The point was what had happened to Maisie.

And what should never happen again.

Lauren testified during the legal proceedings.

She described the night Maisie entered the lobby.

The infant's condition.

The three black stitches.

The response of hospital staff.

When asked why she recognized the gloves, Lauren paused.

Then said:

“Because someone once trusted me to remember them.”

The courtroom fell silent.

Hannah also testified when medically and legally appropriate.

She described the years of coercion.

The threats.

The attempts to force her to sign false statements.

The evidence was extensive.

The case became a national scandal.

But for Lauren, the most important outcome was much smaller.

One evening, Maisie sat beside her on the sofa.

Benji slept in a portable crib nearby.

Hannah was resting upstairs.

Maisie looked at Lauren.

“Are the bad men gone?”

Lauren took a breath.

“Many of the people who hurt you have been arrested.”

Maisie nodded.

“Can they come back?”

Lauren hesitated.

“People are working hard to keep you safe.”

Maisie looked down.

Then whispered:

“I still get scared.”

Lauren put an arm around her.

“That's okay.”

The child leaned against her.

And for the first time, she fell asleep without holding the yellow gloves.
