Chapter 9 - FRANK MADE ONE MORE CHANGE TO HIS WILL

Five years after Thanksgiving, Frank updated his estate plan again.

This time, he told everyone before signing anything.

Not because he needed permission.

Because transparency had become important.

The educational trusts remained separate.

Equal funding principles.

Independent trustee.

Needs could differ.

No grandchild guaranteed identical distributions for every activity.

But all would be considered impartially.

Mia.

Ava.

Noah.

Sophie.

Henry.

Five grandchildren now.

Eleanor attended the family meeting.

She and Frank had reconciled gradually after nearly two years apart.

Not returned to the old marriage.

Built a different one.

Separate financial advisers.

Clear account authority.

Counseling.

Eleanor repaid disputed funds.

Frank stopped using money as a substitute for difficult conversations.

They both changed.

Not perfectly.

Enough.

Then Frank announced one more thing.

His personal estate would be divided principally between Daniel and Michael.

Expected.

But he also created modest direct gifts for each grandchild.

Including Mia.

Eleanor said nothing.

Frank looked at her.

She smiled.

“Five grandchildren.”

Mia, now ten, whispered to me:

“She remembered.”

I squeezed her hand.

“Yes.”

Afterward, Eleanor found me alone.

“You never asked Frank for any of this.”

“No.”

“I told myself you did.”

“I know.”

“Because otherwise I had to admit he loved Mia on his own.”

That sentence contained years of jealousy.

Not romantic jealousy.

Possessive family jealousy.

She continued:

“I thought every person he welcomed reduced what belonged to us.”

“And?”

She looked toward the grandchildren running in the yard.

“I was doing terrible math.”

I laughed softly.

“Yes.”

Family is one of the few places where addition does not require subtraction.

It had taken Eleanor years to learn.

May you like

Better late than never.
