Chapter 8 - GRAHAM COMES HOME DIFFERENT

Graham served fourteen months.
When he returned, nobody threw a party.
Good.
He entered therapy.
Financial monitoring.
Structured visitation with Millie.
At first, Claire attended.
Sometimes an assigned supervisor did.
I stayed out of it unless Millie asked.
Graham apologized to her in a therapist’s office.
No excuses.
“I made you keep a secret because I was scared.”
Millie stared at him.
“Of Audrey leaving?”
“Yes.”
“She left anyway.”
Graham closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“So it didn't work.”
Children.
Brutal accountants.
“No.”
He smiled sadly.
“It made it worse.”
Millie considered.
“Did you think Mommy Claire was dead?”
Graham took a long breath.
“No.”
“Then why did you tell Audrey?”
“Because I was ashamed of how complicated my life was.”
Millie frowned.
“Mommy isn't embarrassing.”
His face crumpled.
“No.”
“She has a wheelchair.”
“I know.”
“That’s not embarrassing.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Graham cried.
“I was embarrassed by who I had become around what happened.”
That was probably the truest answer he ever gave.
Millie did not forgive him instantly.
Good.
She hugged him when she wanted.
Refused sometimes.
He learned not to demand reassurance from a child.

That was part of becoming safer.
