Chapter 7 - MY MARRIAGE LASTED NINE MONTHS

I filed for divorce nine months after our wedding.

People asked why I waited.

Simple.

Because life was happening.

Millie.

Claire.

Trust litigation.

Therapy.

Graham’s case.

My own grief.

I also needed time to separate two questions.

Did Graham love me?

Yes.

Could I remain married to him?

No.

Both answers could coexist.

At mediation, Graham cried.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“I’m asking if there is any version of us later.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He nodded.

No manipulation.

No Millie.

No accusation.

Just pain.

That was one of the first times I saw him accept an answer without trying to manage it.

“I understand.”

Our marriage ended legally.

No dramatic fight over property.

We had been married too briefly for much to untangle.

The real question was Millie.

I had no automatic right to her.

That terrified me.

Then Claire did something I will never forget.

She invited me to a meeting with her lawyer.

Nina explained:

“Claire wants you included in Millie’s support network.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Claire used her tablet.

Regular contact. School events if Millie wants. Holidays sometimes.

My eyes filled.

“You don't owe me that.”

Claire typed:

This isn’t for you.

Then:

It’s for her.

Exactly.

May you like

She understood motherhood better than all of us.
