Chapter 8 - The Midnight Ejection

Adrian stood in the center of the ruined ballroom, his tuxedo soaked in champagne from the fallen pyramid, looking around at the wreckage of his life.

The fifty guests—his so-called friends, the executives, the city officials—were already streaming out through the grand entrance, eager to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal before morning press conferences.

Adrian walked toward me, tears streaming freely down his pale, disheveled face.

“Elena... please,” Adrian choked out, dropping to his knees onto the marble floor, his hands reaching for the hem of my coat. “I was stupid. I was blind! Vanessa manipulated me! I love you, Elena... you’re my wife! We can fix this! We can rebuild Cole Construction together!”

Dominic stepped between us, his leather boot pinning Adrian’s outstretched hand flat against the floor.

“Do not touch my sister,” Dominic commanded in a voice of cold iron.

I looked down at Adrian. For three years, I had believed that patience, loyalty, and quiet grace could earn this man’s respect. I had tolerated his mother’s sneers, his father’s arrogance, and his growing emotional cruelty.

Now, looking at him weeping on the wet floor among broken glass and spilled wine, I felt no hatred. I felt no rage.

I felt only the pristine, liberating freedom of a woman who had finally stepped into the light.

Luca stepped forward, sliding a navy-blue legal folder from his briefcase and dropping it directly in front of Adrian’s face.

“This is a certified Petition for Absolute Dissolution of Marriage,” Luca announced. “Elena has already signed. Under the terms of the prenuptial agreement that you insisted she sign three years ago—the one drafted by your own lawyers to ensure she received nothing—all assets acquired with personal inheritance remain entirely separate.”

Luca smiled with razor-sharp legal venom.

“Since your company’s equity has collapsed to zero and all real estate was collateralized to the Moretti Trust, Elena walks away with 100% of her family's wealth, while you walk away with $18 million in personal civil debt and an active grand jury subpoena.”

“Sign the papers, Adrian,” I whispered.

With trembling, broken fingers, Adrian picked up a silver pen from the carpet and signed his name on the dotted line.

When he finished, I turned my back on him and walked toward the exit, flanked by my five brothers.
