Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Ledger

By sunrise, the pediatric intensive care unit was heavily guarded by two armed county deputies.
Chloe was resting in a private room on the fifth floor, hooked up to an IV line flushing out high levels of pediatric phenobarbital—a powerful sedative used to induce deep, unarousable comas.
Doctor Elena Rossi, the pediatric toxicologist, met me in the family consultation room.
"Mrs. Vance, Chloe is stable," Dr. Rossi assured me, placing a warm hand on my arm. "The dosage was carefully calculated. It was high enough to suppress her heart rate and respiration so low that a casual pulse check would register as flatline, but low enough to prevent permanent brain damage. It was administered by someone with precise pharmaceutical knowledge."
Downstairs at precinct headquarters, Detective Callahan was executing a simultaneous raid on the private medical clinic of Dr. Harold Sterling.
Inside Sterling’s office safe, investigators discovered a handwritten ledger. It documented wire transfers totaling five hundred thousand dollars from Julian’s offshore accounts, timed to clear forty-eight hours after the scheduled funeral service. In exchange, Sterling had fabricated medical charts showing Chloe suffering from a fatal viral myocarditis, bypassed the county coroner’s office, and expedited an embalming waiver.

When presented with the financial paper trail and the prospect of twenty-five years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit murder, Dr. Sterling cracked in less than ten minutes.
He confessed to everything, agreeing to testify as the state's star witness against Julian and Victoria in exchange for a plea deal.
