Chapter 2 - Behind the Bolted Door

The brass doorknob rattled violently.

"Mom? What are you doing in there?" Julian’s voice wasn't filled with grief anymore; it was tight, sharp, and laced with panic. "Open this door right now!"

I didn't answer. I kept one hand pressed firmly over Chloe’s back, shielding her trembling body behind the heavy washing machine, and kept the telephone receiver pressed against my ear.

"Ma'am, stay on the line," the 911 dispatcher urged, her voice steady and urgent. "Officers and paramedics are three minutes out. Do not open that door under any circumstances."

"Julian, step back from the door," I called out, forcing my voice to stay level even as my pulse roared in my ears. "The police and an ambulance are on their way."

There was a dead, suffocating silence on the other side of the wood.

Then came Victoria’s frantic whisper from the hallway. "What did she say? Julian, what did she do?!"

"She called 911," Julian hissed. A sickening thud shook the door frame as his shoulder slammed against it. "Mom, open the damn door! You don’t understand what you’re doing! You’re ruining everything!"

"She's alive, Julian!" I yelled back, tears of fury burning my eyes. "Your six-year-old daughter is breathing in my arms! You locked her in a box!"

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!" Julian screamed, slamming his fist against the wood again. The lock groaned. "We had an arrangement! She was supposed to be in Mexico by tomorrow night! We were going to follow her next week!"

The horror hit me like ice water.

It wasn't just an insurance scam. They hadn't intended for Chloe to suffocate in the earth—they had staged her death to erase her existence, planning to smuggle her out of the country under a forged identity while collecting on a multi-million-dollar trust policy from my late husband's estate that only paid out upon the death of a direct lineal heir. To the world, Chloe would be dead and buried; in reality, she was their ticket to disappearing with millions.

"Get the crowbar from the garage!" Victoria shrieked outside. "Do it before the sirens get here!"

"Grandma, I'm scared," Chloe whimpered, burying her hot, tear-streaked face into my neck. Her little hands clutched my wool shawl with every ounce of strength left in her feverish body.

"I’ve got you, baby," I whispered fiercely, kissing her temple. "Nobody is ever putting you in the dark again. I swear to God on my life."
