Chapter 14 - THE HEART THAT LEARNED TO BEAT AGAIN

A year after the medication incident, I underwent a routine cardiac evaluation.
Dr. Whitaker reviewed the results.
"You're doing well."
I smiled.
"That's good."
He looked at me.
"You're sleeping more."
"Trying."
"Less stress?"
I laughed.
"Different stress."
He smiled.
"Better stress?"
I thought about Sophia's school projects.
Alina's stubbornness.
The community center.
The legal work still ahead.
Then nodded.
"Much better."
The criminal case involving Adrian and Marcus continued through the courts.
Eventually, both faced legal consequences based on the evidence and proceedings.
The outcome didn't erase the betrayal.
But it established accountability.
I didn't celebrate.
Adrian was still my brother.
Marcus had still been my friend.
Grief and anger could exist together.
Alina and I continued building our relationship.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Sophia remained the center of her mother's life.
And I respected that.
One afternoon, Sophia climbed onto my lap while we watched cartoons.
"Boss?"
"Yes, princess?"
"Are you my friend?"
I smiled.
"Always."
She considered.
"Can you be Mommy's friend too?"
I laughed.
"I hope so."
She nodded.
"Good."
Then she whispered:
"Because Mommy smiles when you come."
My throat tightened.
I looked toward the kitchen.
Alina stood there holding a cup of tea.
May you like
She was smiling.
And for the first time in my life, I understood that happiness didn't have to be complicated.
