Chapter 11 - THE EMPIRE I NO LONGER WANTED

The attempted poisoning changed something fundamental inside me.

Not immediately.

Not neatly.

But permanently.

I began looking at my life as if it belonged to someone else.

The mansion.

The guards.

The hidden accounts.

The people who feared my name.

I'd spent twenty years building an empire that required constant suspicion.

And in the end, suspicion hadn't saved me.

A six-year-old girl had.

I met with Julian and a team of independent advisers.

We discussed the legal and financial consequences of stepping away from criminal operations.

It wouldn't be simple.

There were investigations.

Obligations.

People who expected loyalty.

And damage that couldn't be erased.

But I began cooperating with appropriate legal processes and restructuring legitimate businesses under independent oversight.

One afternoon, I visited Alina's apartment.

She opened the door.

"Damian?"

I smiled.

"Hello."

She looked surprised.

"What are you doing here?"

I held up a paper bag.

"Cookies."

Sophia appeared behind her.

"BOSS!"

She ran toward me.

I crouched.

She threw her arms around my neck.

I laughed.

"Hello, princess."

She looked at the bag.

"Chocolate?"

"Of course."

She grinned.

"You're the best."

Alina invited me inside.

The apartment was small.

Warm.

Full of drawings.

There were children's books on the couch.

A half-finished puzzle on the table.

And sunlight spilling across the kitchen floor.

I looked around.

For the first time, I understood what a home was supposed to feel like.

May you like

Not secure because it had guards.

Secure because the people inside felt safe.
