Chapter 6 - REBECCA LEFT A BOX

Rebecca’s sister, Lauren Hale, had kept a storage box for twelve years.
Nobody asked for it.
Until now.
Inside:
Photographs.
Medical papers.
Old insurance documents.
And a microcassette recorder.
Rebecca had used it for work notes.
One recording was dated the night before her death.
Her voice:
Julian keeps saying the house should be in both names. Eleanor says marriage means I shouldn’t have separate property. I told them no.
Then:
If something happens to me, please look at the stairs. Eleanor keeps cleaning them at night.
Victoria stopped the recording.
Could not breathe.
Rebecca knew.
She had tried to leave evidence.
Nobody found it.
Until another woman nearly died the same way.
Detective Cross treated the tape carefully.
Forensics authenticated the recording as consistent with its age.
The old case changed completely.
Julian’s first wife had not simply fallen.
She had been afraid of exactly the method that killed her.

Then came the cruellest secret.
Rebecca’s death had not only financed Julian’s first development deal.
Her unborn child’s death activated a family insurance rider worth another $300,000.
Eleanor used part of that money to pay Chloe’s private-school tuition.
Chloe learned that years later.
Victoria sat staring at the ledger.
Chloe had literally been educated with money connected to Rebecca’s death.
Family comfort built on silence.
That explained the loyalty.
Not excused.
