Chương 9 - THE RING HE STOPPED ASKING ME TO WEAR

Our sixteenth anniversary arrived while we were still living separately.

Adrian sent no flowers.

No jewelry.

At noon, one message:

I know what today is. I won't decide what it means for you.

I read it four times.

Then replied:

Dinner. Seven. Public place.

He arrived at 6:52.

Of course.

We ate at the restaurant where he proposed seventeen years earlier.

Not planned.

I chose it.

Halfway through dinner, Adrian looked at my bare hand.

Then away.

“You can ask.”

He smiled faintly.

“I have learned otherwise.”

“Ask.”

“Do you still have the ring?”

“Yes.”

His breath changed.

“Where?”

“Jewelry box.”

“Do you ever wear it?”

“No.”

He nodded.

Pain.

Accepted.

Then I asked:

“Do you wear yours?”

He held up his hand.

No ring.

That surprised me.

“When did you stop?”

“The morning after you left.”

“Why?”

“I was legally married.”

He looked at me.

“But I didn't feel entitled to advertise a marriage I had damaged while you were deciding whether it still existed.”

I stared.

That was perhaps the most Adrian thing he'd ever learned not to do.

Claim.

Possess.

Display.

I reached across the table.

His hand moved toward mine.

Stopped.

Waited.

I turned my palm upward.

He took it.

Small.

May you like

Ordinary.

Harder than war, apparently.
