Chương 8 - THE HOUSE I REFUSED TO COME HOME TO

The estate remained empty for almost four months.
Adrian lived there.
I did not.
I rented an apartment downtown under my maiden name.
Not hidden.
Chosen.
Adrian never sent guards without asking.
The first time he asked:
“Can Marcus assign someone downstairs?”
“No.”
He nodded.
Two weeks later, after a threatening letter arrived:
“Can Marcus assign someone downstairs?”
“Yes.”
Progress.
We began counseling.
Not reconciliation.
Counseling.
Adrian hated the word boundaries.
Our therapist loved it.
I enjoyed that.
He admitted things I had not known.
That marriage had become the one place he assumed forgiveness was permanent.
That he'd stopped protecting our intimacy because he believed fifteen years made it indestructible.
That when Elena kissed him, for one second he liked being desired by someone connected to a younger version of himself.
He hated saying that.
I needed him to.
I admitted things too.
That I disappeared partly because I wanted to punish him.
That I knew leaving without a word would terrify him.
That danger was not the only reason I refused to call.
He deserved truth too.
Months passed.
No grand gesture.
No yacht.
No diamonds.
No public apology using our marriage as theater.
Adrian sold the River Terminal only after I approved the legitimate deal.
At market price.
Vincent's proxy scheme collapsed.
Matteo received a long sentence after multiple investigations.
The Bellandi council was dissolved.
Independent trustees replaced it.
One evening Adrian asked:
“Do you want the estate?”
I laughed.
“What?”
“If we divorce.”
There it was.
Not if you leave me again.
If we divorce.
A possibility he was finally willing to let exist.
“No.”
“Why?”
“I never liked the west wing.”
He laughed.
Then became serious.
“What do you want?”
I thought.
“A house where the bakery doesn't know our security code.”
He smiled.
“Reasonable.”

Not yet.
But maybe.
