Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN RETURNS WITH EXACT CHANGE

On opening morning, an elderly woman entered.

Gray coat.

Faded scarf.

Scratched flip phone.

Evelyn.

Liam groaned.

“No.”

She smiled.

“What?”

“If you start counting pennies, I’m calling security.”

She laughed.

Then placed exact change on the counter.

For one loaf.

Country bread.

Same as before.

Liam bagged it.

She looked at the badge on his apron.

LIAM — BAKER / CO-OWNER

“Better title.”

“Too long.”

Then she noticed another badge.

A teenager behind the register.

JAMAL — TRAINEE

Sixteen.

Foster care.

Part of the bakery's new paid apprenticeship program.

A customer realized she was short $2.30.

Jamal reached into his pocket.

Liam saw.

“Stop.”

Jamal froze.

Had Liam become Martin?

Then Liam pointed to the Four Dollar Shelf fund.

“You don't spend your bus money.”

The customer looked embarrassed.

Liam smiled.

“Community fund covers it.”

She thanked them.

After she left, Jamal said:

“But you did.”

“What?”

“Spent your last money.”

Liam smiled.

“Bad system.”

“What?”

“The story sounds nice because I helped somebody.”

He pointed toward the fund jar.

“Better story is nobody has to choose between bus fare and whether a stranger eats.”

Evelyn stared at him.

That was the full lesson from the first day.

Individual generosity is beautiful.

Systems that make generosity less costly to the vulnerable are better.

Jamal nodded as if memorizing it.

Then stole a cinnamon roll.

Liam charged him employee price.

May you like

Growth had limits.
