Chapter 9 - ARI MEETS CLAIRE AGAIN

Three years passed.

Ari turned seven.

She remembered Claire.

Not constantly.

Children move forward when adults stop forcing them backward.

One afternoon she asked:

"Can I see her?"

I nearly dropped my coffee.

"Why?"

"I want to ask something."

"What?"

"Private."

Absolutely terrifying answer from a seven-year-old.

Her therapist believed a supervised meeting could be safe if Ari initiated it.

Claire agreed immediately.

No demands.

We met at the therapist's office.

Claire looked older.

Not dramatically.

Less polished.

More real.

Ari entered.

Claire did not reach for her.

Good.

"Hi, Ari."

"Hi."

Silence.

Then Ari asked:

"Why did you say Daddy wouldn't believe me?"

Claire's face broke.

She did not soften the answer.

"Because I wanted you to stop telling him what I was doing."

"Why?"

"Because I knew it was wrong."

Ari thought.

"Did you hate Mommy?"

Claire cried.

"I was jealous of her."

"Why?"

"Because your dad loved her."

Ari looked confused.

"He loved you too."

That sentence hurt every adult in the room.

Claire nodded.

"I didn't understand that people can love someone who died and still love someone alive."

Ari processed.

Then:

"You were dumb."

I almost choked.

Claire laughed through tears.

"Very."

Ari smiled slightly.

Then asked:

"Are you monster?"

Claire looked at me.

I let her answer.

"No."

She said.

"But I acted scary, and I hurt you."

Ari nodded.

That seemed enough.

Then:

"I'm not ready hug."

Claire closed her eyes.

"That's okay."

Perfect answer.

They did not become family again.

No magical stepmother reunion.

Claire became someone from Ari's past who had apologized and respected distance.

Sometimes closure is exactly that.

A door closed gently instead of slammed.
