Chapter 5 - A Child's Whisper at Dawn

Croft’s hand dropped to his side. The warmth in his eyes died, replaced by a tight, defensive chill.

“Of course, Mr. Vance,” Croft said, signaling a server in the hall to kill the audio system in Suite 901. “I apologize for the ambient noise. We were hosting a high-level networking reception for municipal zoning liaisons—essential partners for our upcoming riverfront expansion.”

“A networking reception paid for by the executive entertainment budget?” Ethan asked smoothly.

“Naturally, sir. All fully documented within standard operational guidelines.”

“Then why did my terminal show that your department cut eighty hours of housekeeping shifts last week to meet your quarterly labor ratio?”

Croft swallowed hard, the collar of his tailored shirt suddenly feeling uncomfortably tight. “The labor market in the city has been unpredictable, sir. We had to optimize staff allocations to maintain profitability—”

“You cut the hours of women who scrub your floors so you could serve thirty-dollar oysters to your personal friends,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of quiet, devastating finality.

Before Croft could formulate another corporate excuse, a soft, sleepy voice sounded from the foyer behind Ethan.

“Daddy...?”

Ethan turned immediately, his entire demeanor shifting from an unyielding executive into a tender, protective father.

Lily was standing in the hallway in her pink flannel pajamas, rubbing her eyes with one fist, clutching her stuffed rabbit with the other. She looked up at the tall men in suits with innocent confusion.

“I’m here, sweetheart,” Ethan whispered, crouching down on one knee and opening his arms.

Lily padded across the hardwood floor on bare feet, burying her face into Ethan’s neck. “I heard loud noises... and the lady gave me warm milk.”

Lupita stepped out of the bedroom, gently carrying Lily’s fleece blanket.

Lily looked over Ethan’s shoulder, her eyes catching Lupita’s warm smile. The little girl reached out her small hand, touching Lupita’s apron.

“Thank you for the pretty flowers, Mrs. Lupita,” Lily whispered. “Mommy’s roses look happy now.”

Lupita’s eyes welled with tears. She gently tucked the blanket around Lily’s shoulders. “You sleep well, little bird. The noise is all gone.”

Ethan stood up, holding his daughter securely against his chest. He turned his eyes toward Julian Croft, Patricia, and Karla, who stood frozen in the corridor.

“Julian,” Ethan said softly.

“Yes, Mr. Vance?” Croft answered, his voice barely audible.

“Have the complete general ledger, payroll archives, and internal communications from the past twelve months on the desk in the executive boardroom at seven o'clock tomorrow morning.”

Ethan looked at Patricia and Karla.

“And you two will be there as well.”

The heavy mahogany door of Suite 904 clicked shut, locking from the inside with an absolute, final seal.
