Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Solmere Empire

The trial lasted four months.
Julian Cross faced charges for murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, racketeering, identity theft, pension theft, evidence destruction, and conspiracy.
Senator Laurent faced attempted murder, conspiracy, corruption, obstruction, and financial crimes.
Dr. Sloane faced medical fraud and complicity in Victoria’s death.
Russell Dane faced evidence interference and unlawful detention-related charges.
Bianca pleaded guilty to assault and conspiracy-related offenses tied to public deception, though prosecutors acknowledged her later cooperation.
Charlotte testified for three days.
Julian’s attorney began with the lobby.
“You entered disguised as someone of limited means.”
“I wore ordinary clothing.”
“You intended to provoke a reaction.”
“I intended to observe treatment.”
“You concealed your identity.”
“My identity had been declared dead by your client.”
The attorney moved closer.
“You wanted Bianca to mistreat you.”
“No.”
“You expected it.”
“Yes.”
“Then the lobby incident was a trap.”
“Expecting prejudice does not create the hand that commits it.”
The jury listened closely.
He shifted toward company ownership.
“You now control Solmere.”
“Yes.”
“You removed Julian.”
“He was arrested.”
“You became executive chair.”
“Temporarily.”
“You benefited from exposing these allegations.”
“My mother is dead. Elise Morgan is dead. Isabel lost six years. I was nearly killed twice.”
Charlotte looked directly at Julian.
“If that is your definition of benefit, it explains the company you tried to build.”
Bianca testified after her.
She described the contract, the public lies, and her own behavior.
“Why did you drag Charlotte across the floor?” the prosecutor asked.
Bianca answered through tears.
“Because I believed the room would respect me more if it saw someone beneath me.”
“Did Julian order you to do it?”
“No.”
“Then whose choice was it?”
“Mine.”
That admission prevented her from hiding inside manipulation.
Isabel testified.
Charles presented the original will.
Priya explained the financial structure.
Samuel described the lobby and the fire.
Dr. Hale explained the toxicology evidence.
Sloane described the altered autopsies.
The recordings captured Julian and Laurent discussing Charlotte’s death.
No defense could explain them away.
Julian was convicted on every major count.
He received life imprisonment without parole, plus consecutive sentences for the attempted murder of Charlotte and kidnapping of Isabel.
Senator Laurent received sixty years.
Dr. Sloane received thirty-two years and lost his medical license.
Russell received eight years.
Bianca received seven years under her cooperation agreement and was ordered to complete restitution and public accountability conditions after release.
At sentencing, Julian looked at Charlotte.
“You would have lost Solmere without me.”
Charlotte answered:
“My mother built something people loved. You built a structure that required everyone to fear discovery.”
He smiled bitterly.
“You are still a Vale.”
“Yes.”
She paused.
“That is why I know a name is not a defense.”
The court ordered forfeiture of assets.
Money returned to pension funds.
Elise Morgan’s children received compensation and a protected education trust.
Isabel received restitution and lifetime medical support controlled by her, not Solmere.
The lobby video became evidence in employee training.
Charlotte refused to hide it.
The world would remember what happened on the marble floor.
Not to preserve her humiliation.
