Chapter 14 - THE LETTER EVAN LEFT BEHIND

A year after the shooting, Detective Ortiz called Eden.

She had something for her.

Eden arrived at the station with Nico.

Ortiz handed her a sealed envelope.

It had been recovered from a storage locker connected to Evan's investigation.

The handwriting on the front made Eden's knees weak.

EDEN.

She sat.

Opened it.

And began reading.

Hey, little sister.

If you're reading this, something probably went wrong.

I'm sorry.

I know I've made mistakes.

I know Mom worries.

I know you deserve a brother who doesn't bring trouble to the door.

But I'm trying to fix things.

I found out what Pike and Gallo are doing.

I'm going to tell the truth.

If I don't make it home, please don't spend your life blaming yourself.

You were always the best part of mine.

Go back to school.

Travel.

Fall in love.

Live.

And please, Eden, don't let my mistakes become the walls around your life.

Love, Evan.

Eden couldn't breathe.

She folded the letter.

Pressed it against her chest.

And cried.

Nico sat beside her.

He didn't speak.

He simply held her hand.

After a long time, Eden looked at him.

"He wanted me to live."

Nico nodded.

"Yes."

May you like

She wiped her face.

"Then I will."
