Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LOVE

Love didn't happen all at once.
It happened slowly.
In coffee shops.
On rainy sidewalks.
During late-night phone calls.
In hospital waiting rooms when Eden volunteered with families facing difficult diagnoses.
Nico learned that Eden hated roses but loved sunflowers.
That she cried during old movies.
That she always ordered extra pickles.
And that she could never pass a bookstore without going inside.
Eden learned that Nico hated thunderstorms.
That he played piano when he couldn't sleep.
That he secretly loved terrible science-fiction movies.
And that he was far more frightened of disappointing people than he ever admitted.
They argued.
They apologized.
They learned.
And slowly, something beautiful grew between them.
One evening, Nico took Eden to the lakefront.
The city glowed behind them.
He looked at her.
"Do you know what scares me?"
She smiled.
"Spiders?"
He laughed.
"No."
"Commitment?"
He considered that.
"Maybe."
She laughed.
He took her hand.
"Losing you."
Her smile faded.
"Nico."
He looked away.
"I've spent my life losing people."
She stepped closer.
"Then stop treating love like something you can control."
He looked at her.
"What do I do instead?"
She smiled softly.
"Trust it."
For a moment, he was silent.
Then he kissed her.
Gently.
Carefully.
May you like
As though she were something precious.
And Eden kissed him back.
