Chapter 7 - THE BOY WHO SAVED ME FIRST

Michael became terrifyingly calm.

That frightened me more than shouting would have.

“Where is my son?”

Tony smiled from the phone.

“You know the rules.”

“There are no rules anymore.”

“Bring Aurora and the key.”

“No.”

Tony turned the camera.

Zach sat in the chair.

He was crying.

But conscious.

“Dad?”

Michael's face nearly broke.

“I’m here, buddy.”

“I’m sorry I ran away.”

“No.”

Michael crouched even though Zach was only on a screen.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Tony pulled the phone back.

“One hour.”

The call ended.

Michael stood.

“No police.”

Sophia immediately said:

“Absolutely police.”

“No.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Michael.”

“No.”

I grabbed his arm.

He looked down at my hand.

“You said I get choices.”

“This isn't your choice.”

“He asked for me.”

“Exactly.”

“Zach saved me first.”

“Aurora—”

“He was six years old in a storage room and saw bruises on someone he didn't know.”

My voice shook.

“He stood in front of me emotionally before any adult did.”

Michael’s jaw clenched.

“I am not letting you trade yourself.”

“I’m not suggesting that.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“We give Tony what he thinks he wants.”

Dominic understood first.

“The key.”

I nodded.

“But not the archive.”

Michael stared.

“We don't know what's inside.”

“We know enough.”

Sophia said:

“We can coordinate law enforcement quietly.”

Michael shook his head.

“If Tony sees anything—”

“He expects you to bring men,” I said.

“What?”

“He knows who you are.”

Michael frowned.

“He expects security. He expects tricks.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“He doesn’t expect me to walk in alone.”

“No.”

“Michael.”

“No.”

“This is not your decision.”

“My son.”

“And my life.”

We stared at each other.

Regina spoke softly.

“Aurora’s right.”

I turned on her.

“You don't get a vote.”

Fair.

She looked down.

Dominic studied the church address.

“The archive entrance may be separate.”

Michael looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Old church construction. Storage tunnels.”

Sophia coordinated with authorities despite Michael’s resistance.

No sirens.

No visible police.

A tactical team would remain several blocks away unless triggered.

Michael hated it.

I loved Sophia.

The plan was simple enough to be terrifying.

I would arrive visibly.

Michael would remain nearby.

Dominic and Luca would locate alternate access.

The key would be real.

But the archive box, if we reached it first, would be removed.

When we arrived, the old church looked abandoned.

Boarded windows.

Faded stone.

Rain.

Of course there was rain.

Drama apparently controls weather.

I stepped from the car.

Michael caught my hand.

“Aurora.”

I turned.

His gray eyes were no longer cold.

“I need you to come back.”

Something in my chest shifted.

“I will.”

“Don't promise things you can't control.”

“Then you too.”

“What?”

“Come back.”

He nodded.

I walked toward the church.

Inside, Tony waited with two men.

Zach sat near the altar.

His eyes widened.

“Aurora!”

“Hi, fiancé.”

He sniffled.

“You came.”

“Of course.”

Tony looked irritated.

“Cute.”

I held up the brass key.

“Let him go.”

“Archive first.”

“You don't know where it is.”

“You do.”

“My father left an address.”

“And?”

“Not directions.”

Tony smiled.

“Then we search.”

We entered the basement.

Storage rooms.

Old stone.

Broken church furniture.

My father’s note included one strange line:

Stars only matter when you look up.

I kept looking at ceilings.

Then I saw it.

Three brass stars embedded above an old wooden door.

Tony smiled.

“Gabriel always loved puzzles.”

I inserted the key.

Click.

Inside was not money.

Rows of sealed document boxes.

Tape recordings.

Photographs.

Names.

Lives.

Tony stared.

For one second, greed transformed into fear.

He had spent seven years wondering exactly what Victor had preserved.

Now he knew.

I stepped between him and the shelves.

“Zach leaves.”

Tony laughed.

“You think you negotiate now?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because once you opened this room, you stopped needing me.”

His expression changed.

That was true.

I was now expendable.

Which meant my leverage had disappeared.

Unless—

“Except,” I continued, “you don't know what my father copied.”

Tony stopped.

“What?”

“I had the flash drive.”

“You brought it?”

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Lie.

Michael had it.

“If I don't leave with Zach, copies go everywhere.”

Tony studied me.

“Moretti taught you quickly.”

“No.”

I smiled slightly.

“My stepmother did.”

Upstairs, something crashed.

Tony’s men turned.

Dominic.

Luca.

Diversion.

Tony grabbed my arm.

I jerked free.

“Don't.”

He smiled.

“You sound brave.”

“I’m terrified.”

That surprised him.

“Brave people are terrified.”

I thought of Dad.

“Idiots aren't.”

Then Zach kicked Tony in the shin.

Hard.

Tony shouted.

I grabbed Zach.

We ran.

Chaos erupted.

No graphic gunfight.

Shouts.

Footsteps.

Michael appeared at the stairwell.

“Zach!”

His son launched toward him.

Michael caught him.

For one second nothing else existed.

Then Tony appeared behind us.

Luca blocked him.

Police entered seconds later.

Tony stared at Regina, who had followed investigators inside.

“You.”

She looked at him.

“For Gabriel.”

Tony laughed.

“He never loved you.”

Regina’s face broke.

“Maybe not enough.”

She looked at me.

“But more than I deserved.”

Tony was taken into custody.

His men surrendered.

The archive was secured.

Zach would not release Michael’s neck.

I stood several feet away.

Suddenly all the adrenaline disappeared.

My knees gave out.

Michael caught me with one arm while holding Zach with the other.

“I’ve got you.”

I started crying.

Not graceful tears.

Ugly, exhausted sobs.

Zach reached toward me.

“You came.”

I touched his hair.

“You came for me first.”

Michael looked at us.

Then something changed in his face.

Maybe Teresa had been right.

Maybe guilt opened the door.

But this was not guilt.

He leaned his forehead against mine.

Just for one second.

No kiss.

No declaration.

Something quieter.

“Both of you,” he whispered, “are going to kill me.”

Zach laughed through his tears.

I did too.

May you like

And for the first time in months, I believed I might live long enough to have a future worth being afraid of losing.
