Chương 6 - WHY RYAN CUT THE BRAKES

Ryan talked after two weeks.
Not because he became sorry.
Because prosecutors showed him the numbers.
Fraud.
Embezzlement.
Attempted murder.
His lawyer explained arithmetic.
Ryan admitted stealing.
At first small amounts.
Twenty thousand.
Then fifty.
Nobody noticed.
Gabe hated administration.
The foundation trusted Ryan.
Then losses grew.
He borrowed to hide theft.
Stole more to repay.
By year four, he needed almost two million dollars simply to keep earlier lies from collapsing.
Then the accountant found discrepancies.
Gabe scheduled a meeting with federal investigators.
Ryan panicked.
He knew Gabe planned to ride from the shop to Nashville that afternoon.
So he entered the garage.
Cut the rear brake line.
Not completely.
Enough to fail under pressure.
He expected the crash to look accidental.
It almost did.
Megan sat beside Gabe when the detective explained.
His face did not change.
Then:
“Why that road?”
Coincidence.
Ryan had not chosen where Gabe crashed.
That mattered.
Because Avery finding him remained unexplained.
No secret plan.
No Ryan connection to Megan.
No hidden route information passed to her.
Just a mother driving home.
And a five-year-old insisting they stop at exactly the right place.
Gabe asked:
“Can I see him?”
The detective frowned.
“No.”
Probably wise.
Outside, Gabe punched the brick wall once.
Megan grabbed his wrist before the second.
“Stop.”
“He tried to kill me.”
“Yes.”
“With Lily’s money.”
“Yes.”
“He watched me bury her.”
“I know.”
His voice broke.
“He carried her.”
That was the part.
Not the money.
Not even the crash.
The funeral.
Megan stood quietly while he cried.
No hug at first.
Then Gabe leaned toward her.
She held him.
Avery was nowhere near the courthouse.
Good.
Children should not have to witness adults breaking simply because they helped save them.
Later that evening, Gabe sat on his porch.
Avery arrived with Megan to bring food.
Not because he needed rescuing.
Because Megan cooked too much lasagna.
At least that was her explanation.
Avery sat beside him.
“Wolf man gone?”
Megan almost dropped the dish.
Gabe looked at Avery.
“Yes.”
“Jail?”
“Yes.”
Avery nodded.
Then:
“Lily says good.”
Megan closed her eyes.
“Avery.”
“What?”
Gabe almost smiled.
“Your mom prefers independently verified statements.”
Avery frowned.
“Big words.”
“Very.”
Then the girl leaned against Gabe’s arm.
“Lily says you can cry.”
His smile disappeared.
Megan started to intervene.
Gabe shook his head gently.
“It’s okay.”
Avery looked toward the yard.
“She says you hide in garage when sad.”
Gabe went completely still.
Megan watched.
He whispered:
“How does she know that?”
Avery shrugged.
“She knows you.”
Gabe looked at Megan.
She had no answer.
May you like
Neither did he.
