Chương 5 - THE MAN IN THE IRON HAVEN VEST

Ryan denied everything.

Naturally.

The mailbox?

Administrative convenience.

Late-night garage visit?

Paperwork.

Missing cutter?

Anyone could take it.

Foundation payments?

Bookkeeping confusion.

Gabe wanted to believe each explanation.

Investigators did not.

Financial subpoenas revealed Ryan owned two rental properties through an LLC.

Paid in cash.

A boat.

Cash.

Private school tuition for his sons.

Cash.

None matched his legitimate income.

Then came the devastating part.

Some stolen money came from Lily’s Promise emergency housing fund.

Money intended for parents sleeping in cars outside children’s hospitals.

Gabe sat inside his office.

Did not speak for almost ten minutes.

Megan waited.

He finally whispered:

“He stole her name.”

“No.”

His eyes lifted.

“He stole money.”

She sat opposite him.

“Lily’s name still means what you built it to mean.”

Gabe looked away.

“Ryan doesn't own that.”

That was the second thing Megan gave him that nobody else had.

The first was his life.

The second was a way to separate betrayal from memory.

Then Ryan disappeared.

Not from Tennessee.

From routine.

His phone off.

House empty.

Family staying with relatives.

Gabe assumed he ran.

Police believed otherwise.

If Ryan planned to flee, why leave his passport?

Then a security alarm activated at Mercer Repair at 2:13 a.m.

Someone inside.

Police arrived.

Nobody there.

But the drawer in Gabe's desk had been forced.

Empty.

Gabe stared.

“What was inside?”

“Nothing.”

Cole frowned.

“Then why break it?”

Gabe remembered.

The USB.

Financial evidence.

He had hidden a duplicate inside his motorcycle saddlebag the morning of the crash.

The damaged bike had been recovered to the police impound, then released back to the garage once forensic work was done.

The saddlebag?

Still attached.

Everyone moved at once.

Inside the garage, Gabe opened it.

Empty.

The USB was gone.

Ryan had returned.

And taken it.

Or believed he had.

Gabe smiled for the first time in days.

Megan frowned.

“What?”

“The actual copy is with the attorney.”

“Then what was in the bag?”

“A decoy.”

Cole started laughing.

“Tracker?”

“Better.”

The USB logged whenever someone connected it to a network.

At 3:06 a.m., it connected.

A motel outside Murfreesboro.

Police obtained a warrant.

Ryan was arrested before breakfast.

The cutter was in his truck.

So were forged foundation records.

And a laptop containing spreadsheets tracking money diverted over four years.

Evidence.

Real evidence.

No ghosts required.
