Chapter 8 - SOPHIE TESTIFIES WITHOUT ENTERING A COURTROOM

Alejandro did not want Sophie involved.
Her therapist disagreed with pretending nothing happened.
“She needs agency.”
So Sophie was allowed to give a protected forensic interview.
No courtroom.
No Valerie.
No Nathan.
A trained specialist asked questions gently.
Alejandro watched from another room.
“Why did you record Valerie?”
Sophie played with the sleeve of her sweater.
“Because Daddy always says if something happens to his trucks, cameras help people know the truth.”
Alejandro started crying.
Teresa held his hand.
The interviewer asked:
“Why didn't you tell your dad sooner?”
Sophie whispered:
“Because he was happy.”
That destroyed him.
She had endured fear because she thought protecting Alejandro’s happiness was her responsibility.
Eight years old.
He had failed to notice.
Afterward, he knelt in front of her.
“You never protect my happiness by being hurt.”
Sophie looked at him.
“Never?”
“Never.”
“What if you love somebody?”
“If they hurt you, I need to know.”
“What if you get sad?”
“Then I get sad.”
He touched her cheek.
“That is my job. Not yours.”
She wrapped her arms around him.
For the first time in weeks, Alejandro breathed.
The criminal cases moved forward.
Valerie eventually accepted a plea agreement on multiple charges related to child endangerment, evidence tampering, fraud conspiracy, and obstruction, while providing evidence against Nathan.
Nathan refused a deal.
The case went to trial.
Financial records proved the fraud.
Phone data established his contact with Marissa.
Forensic testimony connected the tampering.
His own warehouse statements helped complete the chain.
The jury convicted him on the major charges brought in connection with Marissa’s death and the related conspiracy.
Alejandro did not celebrate.
Nothing brought his sister back.
Justice was not resurrection.
But it gave Sophie something important.
Her mother had not simply disappeared into an unexplained accident.
May you like
Someone had been held accountable.
