Chapter 6 - VICTOR’S FIRST LIE HAD BEEN FOUR YEARS OLD

The forensic review reopened Northlake’s history.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because if Victor had manipulated company records before trying to kill me, investigators needed the financial context.

The old emails were reconstructed from backups.

Adrian had indeed raised concerns about questionable vendors.

Victor intercepted several messages.

Then forwarded altered versions to me.

One line originally written by Adrian:

These accounts need to be frozen until we verify beneficial ownership.

Victor’s version:

These accounts need to remain outside Lena’s review until we verify beneficial ownership.

One changed phrase.

Enough.

I remembered reading it.

Remembered feeling betrayed.

Remembered confronting Adrian.

He refused to explain fully because Victor had already threatened to implicate me using documents Victor controlled.

The result?

Adrian sold his stake.

Victor gained influence.

Then married me.

Not a romance created solely for fraud.

Evidence did not show that.

Victor probably did love me once.

That was the difficult part.

People evolve.

Greed grows.

Debt creates desperation.

Entitlement transforms love into ownership.

By the time I became pregnant, Victor had become someone who looked at my life and calculated insurance proceeds.

The old vendors had diverted approximately $2.1 million over several years through inflated and unsupported invoices.

Not all to Victor directly.

Some to associates.

Some through entities he influenced.

Civil claims followed.

Regulators became involved.

Northlake’s board suspended Victor before ultimately terminating him.

The company survived.
