Chapter 4 - VICTOR HAD WRITTEN HIS OWN ALIBI BEFORE HE LOCKED ME IN

Investigators opened the email with my consent.

Victor had scheduled it hours before the freezer incident.

It read:

Lena,

I know we argued tonight. I’m sorry I left. I needed space. I hope you went home after finishing the inventory review. Call me when you wake up.

A manufactured record.

Something he could point to later.

See?

He thought I went home.

He had no idea I was trapped.

Except the intercom recording destroyed that story.

So did his vehicle.

So did access logs.

So did the freezer override tied to his credentials.

Victor had planned extensively.

But planning is not the same as perfection.

Then investigators discovered another detail.

The life-insurance policy had been modified six months earlier.

Victor increased my coverage.

I remembered signing paperwork.

He told me it was part of our estate planning before the twins arrived.

I trusted him.

The policy existed legally.

The dangerous part was what he intended to do because of it.

His debts were much larger than I knew.

Personal loans.

Business obligations.

Investment losses.

Nearly $3.7 million in exposure.

He had also borrowed against our house without fully explaining the extent.

My husband was not trying to become rich from my death.

He was trying to avoid becoming broke.

That made it somehow worse.

I had been reduced to a balance-sheet solution.

Then came another surprise.

Victor had prepared a guardianship document naming his sister, Melissa Carter, as preferred guardian for the twins if both parents died.

Nothing automatically wrong with that.

Except his messages with Melissa.

She knew about his financial problems.

She knew about the insurance.

Did she know about the freezer?

The evidence initially said no.

One message:

Victor: If something happens to Lena, the policy fixes everything.

Melissa: Stop saying things like that. It sounds insane.

Another:

Melissa: I’m not raising your children because you’re too stupid to manage debt.

Not exactly conspiracy.

Investigators treated her separately.

Correctly.

I was beginning to understand something.

Betrayal creates hunger for simple categories.

Good.

Bad.

Loyal.

Enemy.

But Adrian had supposedly been my enemy.

Melissa was Victor’s sister.

One tried to save me.

May you like

The other told her brother he sounded insane.

Truth did not respect family labels.
