Chapter 5 - The Sister Behind the PlanPolice arrested Ross early on December 24.

He was charged with evidence tampering, identity theft, unlawful access to electronic accounts, and offenses connected to the procurement-fraud investigation.
Gwendolyn disappeared before officers reached the house.
Her phone was found inside a grocery-store trash can.
Her car was abandoned near Interstate 70.
Corinne was at Miriam’s home decorating cookies with Casey when Lena called.
“Lock every door,” Lena said. “Gwendolyn may try to contact you.”
“Does she have access to weapons?”
“None registered. But we don’t know what she took from the house.”
Corinne looked at Casey, who was carefully placing silver sprinkles on a star-shaped cookie.
She did not want her daughter to see fear in her face.
“We’re leaving,” Corinne told Miriam.
They relocated to a hotel under police protection.
That afternoon, Ross requested to speak with investigators.
He blamed everything on Gwendolyn.
He claimed she had manipulated him after Corinne deployed.
He said Gwendolyn created the false messages, mistreated Casey, and planned to steal Corinne’s money.
Then Adrian played the recording from the office.
Ross’s own voice filled the room.
Casey will say whatever we teach her to say.
Ross stopped cooperating.
Meanwhile, Malcolm examined Gwendolyn’s laptop and discovered a hidden folder containing hundreds of photographs.
They began years earlier.
Gwendolyn had saved pictures of Corinne’s clothes, hairstyle, home decorations, and family vacations.
She had copied Corinne’s online purchases.
She bought identical perfume.
She practiced Corinne’s signature.
In several private videos, she stood in front of a mirror rehearsing.
“My name is Corinne Hardy.”
“I am Casey’s mother.”
“This is my house.”
The obsession was deeper than jealousy.
Gwendolyn did not merely want Corinne’s life.
She believed she deserved it.
Lena arranged for a psychologist to examine the evidence.
The specialist warned that Gwendolyn might attempt to take Casey, believing the child completed the identity she had constructed.
At 8:40 p.m., Miriam received a text.
It came from an unknown number.
Casey left her blanket at home. Meet me in the church parking lot, and I’ll give it to you. Don’t tell Corinne. She will overreact.
Miriam immediately showed the message to police.
The church parking lot was placed under surveillance.
No one appeared.
It was a distraction.
Back at the hotel, a fire alarm sounded.
Guests began entering the hallway.
A hotel employee knocked and instructed everyone to evacuate.
Corinne opened the door only a few inches.
The woman outside wore a hotel jacket and cap.
But the name tag was upside down.
Corinne looked at her shoes.
Cream-colored ankle boots.
Gwendolyn’s boots.
Corinne slammed the door.
Gwendolyn threw her weight against it.
“Casey!” she screamed. “Come to Mama Gwen!”
Casey began crying.
Miriam pulled her into the bathroom while Corinne braced herself against the door.
“Gwendolyn, the police are downstairs.”
“They took Ross because of you!”
“You and Ross created this.”
“You always take everything!”
Gwendolyn struck the door again.
“Mom took your side. Teachers took your side. Ross chose you first. Everyone acts like you earned that life.”
“I did not take your life.”
“You were given mine!”
The doorframe cracked.
Corinne stepped back and reached for the lamp.
Gwendolyn forced the door open.
She rushed into the room wearing one of Corinne’s old winter coats.
For one terrible second, Corinne understood the full extent of her sister’s delusion.
Gwendolyn had cut her hair to match Corinne’s.
She wore the same shade of lipstick.
Even her earrings were identical to the pair Ross had given Corinne on their tenth anniversary.
“Casey belongs with me,” Gwendolyn said.
“No,” Corinne answered. “Casey belongs to herself. She is not something either of us can possess.”
Gwendolyn lunged toward the bathroom.
Corinne blocked her.
They collided against the dresser.
Gwendolyn grabbed Corinne’s hair, but Corinne twisted free and pinned her arm behind her back using the defensive training she had learned years earlier.
Gwendolyn screamed.
“You think you’re better than me!”
“No.”
Corinne held her firmly against the carpet.
“I think my daughter deserves better than both the people who frightened her.”
Police rushed into the room seconds later.
As they placed Gwendolyn in handcuffs, she turned toward Casey, who stood behind Miriam.
“Tell them I’m your mother!”
Casey clutched the teddy bear.
Then she shook her head.
“You are Aunt Gwen.”
Gwendolyn froze.

“My mommy came home.”
For the first time, Gwendolyn had nothing to say.
