Chapter 14 - The Trial That Shook America

Six months later, Richard Caldwell stood trial in federal court.
The prosecution presented financial records, authenticated communications, witness testimony, and evidence connecting Caldwell to the conspiracy surrounding Thomas Bennett's death.
Marcus Voss testified under a cooperation agreement.
Julian Blackwell testified too.
He admitted accepting money to conceal evidence.
His cooperation did not erase his crimes, and he faced consequences of his own.
Damon testified about the Blackwell financial records and his father's final letter.
Then Evelyn Bennett took the stand.
For nearly three hours, she described the threats that had kept her silent for nineteen years.
Kate watched from the gallery.
She held Damon's hand so tightly her fingers hurt.
When the prosecutor asked Evelyn why she had finally come forward, her mother looked toward Kate.
"Because my daughter showed me that fear doesn't have to decide the rest of our lives."
Kate began crying.
The trial lasted seven weeks.
In the end, the jury returned guilty verdicts on the principal corruption and conspiracy charges.
Caldwell was taken into custody pending sentencing.
Additional proceedings concerning the murders continued separately.
Preston Caldwell, meanwhile, faced his own criminal case.
The evidence against him was overwhelming.
He ultimately pleaded guilty to assault charges under an agreement that required a custodial sentence.
The other men involved faced charges according to their individual actions.
Kate attended the sentencing hearing.
Preston looked at her once.
She didn't look away.
But she didn't feel triumphant.
She felt free.
Outside the courthouse, Damon waited beside a modest black sedan.
No convoy.
No bodyguards surrounding him.
Just Damon.
Kate smiled.
"Where's the expensive car?"
"Sold it."
"Seriously?"
He nodded.
"Along with several other things."
Kate laughed.
"What happened to the billionaire mafia boss?"
Damon opened the passenger door.
"He decided he wanted a different life."
Kate stepped closer.
"And what life is that?"
Damon looked at her.
"One where I don't have to be feared to feel powerful."
She kissed him.
For the first time, their future didn't seem to belong to their fathers, their enemies, or the past.
It belonged to them.
May you like
But Damon still had one secret.
And he planned to reveal it on the anniversary of the night they met.
