Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Refused to Stay Silent

The courthouse was surrounded by reporters.

Kate stood outside the entrance wearing a navy-blue dress.

Her arm remained in a brace.

Damon waited beside her.

"You don't have to do this today," he said.

Kate looked toward the cameras.

"Yes, I do."

Inside, Preston Caldwell sat beside his attorneys.

He looked polished.

Confident.

Almost bored.

But when Kate entered, his smile faded.

She took the witness stand.

The prosecutor asked her to describe what happened at the Blackwell estate.

Kate spoke slowly.

She described the library.

The men blocking the exit.

Preston grabbing her.

The pain.

The fear.

And the humiliation of believing nobody would help.

Preston's attorney approached.

"Miss Bennett, isn't it true that Mr. Blackwell paid your mother's medical bills?"

"Yes."

"And isn't it true that you have developed a romantic relationship with him?"

Kate hesitated.

"Yes."

The attorney smiled.

"So you have a financial and personal incentive to accuse Mr. Caldwell."

Kate looked directly at him.

"No."

He raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"My arm was broken before Damon Blackwell paid a single bill."

The courtroom grew quiet.

She continued.

"My injuries were documented by a physician. The security recordings show who entered the library. And the people who saw what happened can testify."

The attorney shifted.

Kate held his gaze.

"You can question my relationship. You can question my income. You can question why I was working as a maid."

Her voice strengthened.

"But none of those things change what happened to me."

Behind her, Damon lowered his head.

He had never been prouder of anyone.

Later that afternoon, prosecutors introduced security footage recovered from the mansion.

The recording showed Preston pulling Kate into the library.

Another camera captured him leaving while she struggled to stand.

Two witnesses confirmed hearing her cry out.

The judge denied Preston's request to dismiss the charges.

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Kate stopped at the microphones.

"My name is Kate Bennett," she said.

"And I want every person who's ever been afraid to report abuse by someone powerful to know something."

She took a breath.

"Your voice matters."

The statement spread rapidly online.

But that evening, Damon received devastating news.

Federal agents had executed search warrants at Blackwell Enterprises.

And his own name appeared on the investigation's list of potential suspects.
