Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT MILA SAID NO

Matteo was arrested on financial and obstruction charges six weeks later.

Additional investigations followed.

Raven Industrial.

Safety falsification.

Witness intimidation.

Illegal revenue.

The Moretti organization began fracturing.

Some men disappeared.

Some cooperated.

Some threatened Alessandro.

Victor warned him:

“If you keep turning records over, you may be indicted too.”

“I know.”

Elena heard about it from the news.

She did not call.

Not immediately.

Then one night someone threw a brick through her apartment window.

No note.

No gunshot.

Just a brick.

Enough.

Mila screamed.

Elena covered her daughter with her body.

Police came.

Victor arrived.

Then Alessandro.

He stopped outside when he saw Mila crying.

Something in his face changed.

He turned toward Victor.

“Where is Matteo being held?”

Victor understood the tone.

“No.”

Elena heard.

She stepped outside.

“What are you going to do?”

“Nothing you need to know.”

Wrong answer.

Mila appeared behind Elena wrapped in a blanket.

“Sandro?”

He looked at her.

She had been crying.

“What?”

“Are you going to hurt the bad man?”

Nobody spoke.

Alessandro looked at Elena.

She did not save him.

His answer.

His choice.

Mila continued:

“Because he scared us?”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“Will that make him stop being bad?”

The question was so simple it humiliated every adult instinct in him.

“No.”

“Will it make Mama not scared?”

He looked at Elena.

“No.”

Mila hugged the blanket tighter.

“Then don’t.”

Silence.

Alessandro had ordered men beaten for less.

Had ruined careers over insults.

Had spent decades teaching everyone that fear was prevention.

A five-year-old had just reduced his entire philosophy to one useless equation.

If hurting Matteo did not make Mila safer—

what exactly was it for?

Himself.

Rage.

Pride.

The need to feel powerful.

Alessandro closed his eyes.

Then looked at Victor.

“Call the prosecutor.”

Victor stared.

“Tell them about the threats we haven’t disclosed.”

Alessandro’s voice lowered.

“All of them.”

Victor nodded.

“What about our exposure?”

“All of it.”

Elena looked at him.

He turned toward her.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For making a child teach me something I should have known.”

Mila stepped forward.

“Can we go inside? It’s cold.”

Alessandro laughed once.

“Yes.”

Inside, he swept broken glass while Elena packed bags.

Not his men.

Him.

Mila sat on the counter watching.

“You missed one.”

He looked down.

She pointed.

“There.”

He swept it.

“Bossy.”

“My teacher says I’m helpful.”

“Of course she does.”

Elena watched them.

A mafia king sweeping glass beneath the direction of a five-year-old in dinosaur pajamas.

Daniel would have laughed until he cried.

That memory hurt.

May you like

But for the first time, it also felt warm.
