Chapter 6 - WHAT ELENA FOUND IN DANIEL’S BOX

Elena had kept Daniel’s work box for six years.

Never opened it fully.

Too painful.

Now she did.

Old pay stubs.

Tools.

A Christmas card from Mila’s preschool.

Receipts.

At the bottom, a USB drive.

She almost ignored it.

Then plugged it in.

Daniel had saved copies.

Safety reports.

Photographs.

And one audio recording.

His supervisor Keith Mallory.

Daniel’s voice:

“I’m not sending anyone onto that platform until the rail is fixed.”

Keith:

“You don’t make that call.”

“I do if I’m the guy standing on it.”

Keith laughed.

Then:

“Matteo said keep production moving.”

Elena froze.

Matteo.

Daniel continued:

“Then Matteo can come stand on it himself.”

The recording ended.

Two days later Daniel died.

Elena sat at the kitchen table until sunrise.

Then she called Victor.

“I have something.”

Within hours, independent investigators had copies.

Not Alessandro’s men.

Outside lawyers.

Regulators.

Prosecutors reviewing the Raven matter.

Elena insisted.

“If this is evidence, it goes where evidence goes.”

Alessandro agreed.

Again.

No argument.

That scared her more than if he fought.

“Why are you agreeing with everything?”

They sat across from each other in the boring safe house.

Mila colored nearby.

Alessandro said:

“I am practicing.”

“Practicing what?”

“Not assuming I get the final word.”

She almost smiled.

“You’re bad at it.”

“I know.”

Then his face grew serious.

“Matteo had you followed.”

Elena’s smile vanished.

“What?”

“Two men.”

She stood.

“Mila.”

“She’s safe.”

“Do not tell me she’s safe while saying men followed us.”

“You’re right.”

“What are you doing?”

“Matteo is being investigated.”

“That was not my question.”

Alessandro looked at her.

She understood.

The old path.

Kill him.

The new path.

Law.

Exposure.

Consequences that might also destroy Alessandro.

“What happens to you if investigators follow everything?”

“I don't know.”

“Prison?”

“Possible.”

Elena stared.

“You're doing it anyway?”

“Yes.”

“Because of Daniel?”

“Partly.”

“Me?”

“No.”

That surprised her.

Alessandro continued.

“Because if I do it for you, I can blame you later.”

Elena went still.

“I am doing it because I finally understand the debt belongs to me.”

That was the first thing he said that sounded truly different.

Then Mila approached holding a crayon.

“Sandro.”

“Yes?”

“Can you draw a cat?”

“No.”

“Try.”

He took the crayon.

Produced something that looked like a diseased potato.

Mila stared.

“That’s bad.”

Elena laughed.

Alessandro looked offended.

“What?”

“That is not a cat.”

“I warned you.”

Mila pushed another sheet toward him.

“Do it again.”

He did.

Because a five-year-old expected improvement.

May you like

And for reasons he could not explain, he suddenly did too.
