Chapter 7 - ETHAN CALDWELL SAYS NO

Ethan had spent his entire life obeying Richard Caldwell.

Even his cruelty was borrowed.

That didn't excuse what he did to me.

But it explained why saying no terrified him.

We met in an empty parking garage.

Ethan looked nothing like the man who shoved me.

No friends.

No expensive jacket.

No audience.

He handed me a folder.

“My father ordered the break-in.”

“I assumed.”

“He didn't order the car.”

Victor looked up.

“Who did?”

“Julian.”

The brothers were working together, but Julian had become more aggressive.

Richard wanted money.

Julian wanted Victor gone.

Ethan had also found evidence Luis was being held at a Caldwell construction site.

“Why help us?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Because you were right.”

“About?”

“It was only water.”

For a second, I couldn't speak.

He continued.

“My whole life, everyone apologized to me. Even when I was wrong.”

He looked ashamed.

“You were the first person who didn't.”

We rescued my father that night.

Not with an army.

With building inspectors, federal agents and journalists.

Victor wanted force.

I wanted witnesses.

For once, he listened.

Caldwell couldn't make thirty cameras disappear.

Luis walked out alive.

Richard Caldwell was arrested for kidnapping and conspiracy.

But Julian escaped.

And before disappearing, he triggered demolition preparations at my building.

Mateo stared at the message.

“There are still people inside.”

Caldwell's contractors had lied.

The building had been cleared on paper.

In reality, seventeen families remained.

May you like

And demolition was scheduled for six the next morning.
