Chapter 5 - THE MAN MY MOTHER BURIED WITHOUT A BODY

The photograph had been taken in Newark.

We found my father in a motel.

He opened the door.

I knew him instantly.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray.

But him.

“Anna.”

I slapped him.

Hard.

Then I cried.

He did too.

Mateo couldn't move.

Luis had lived under another name for fourteen years.

Richard Caldwell had threatened us after Luis tried to expose the construction fraud.

My mother knew.

She helped him disappear.

“What?”

“She told us you left.”

“To protect you.”

“She let me hate you.”

“She kept you alive.”

The anger had nowhere clean to go.

Luis explained that Caldwell's fraud never stopped.

Unsafe materials.

Bribed inspectors.

Fake tenant agreements.

Insurance schemes.

Forced acquisitions.

He had spent years collecting evidence.

“Why come back now?”

“Because Caldwell Square isn't just apartments.”

He unfolded engineering plans.

Under the new development was an underground transit access tunnel.

Caldwell planned to construct over compromised foundations using falsified reports.

“If they build it,” Luis said, “people could die.”

Victor looked at him.

“Like Sofia.”

Luis lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Then someone shot through the motel window.

Victor dragged me down.

Mateo pulled our father behind the bed.

More shots.

Luis shouted:

“They found me!”

We escaped through the bathroom window.

But during the chaos, Luis disappeared.

Again.

This time willingly.

He left behind a flash drive.

And a message for me.

DON'T TRUST VICTOR'S BROTHER.

I stared at Victor.

“You have a brother?”

His face hardened.

“Half brother.”

“Name?”

“Julian.”

“What does Julian do?”

Victor looked at the flash drive.

May you like

“He runs my company.”
