Chapter 9 - THE HUSBAND WHO WAS STILL ALIVE

Thomas Bennett was found three weeks later.
Not at Northbridge.
At a separate facility in Pennsylvania.
Investigators discovered records connecting his disappearance to the same network of shell companies and private contractors.
Thomas had been living under an assumed identity.
He was alive.
But he'd endured years of isolation and trauma.
Elena received the news while Mia was coloring at the kitchen table.
Mara called.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“We found Thomas.”
Silence.
Elena gripped the phone.
“What?”
“He's alive.”
Her knees weakened.
She sat down.
Mia looked up.
“Mommy?”
Elena began crying.
“Your daddy.”
Mia frowned.
“Daddy?”
Elena covered her mouth.
Mia had been too young to remember him clearly.
She knew him through photographs.
Stories.
And the little stuffed bear he'd bought before she was born.
The reunion took place in a quiet hospital room.
Thomas sat beside the window.
He looked older than his thirty-six years.
His hands trembled.
When Elena entered, he stood.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then she whispered:
“Thomas?”
He began crying.
“Elena.”
She crossed the room.
They held each other.
No speeches.
No dramatic promises.
Just two people who had spent years wondering whether they'd ever meet again.
Mia stood beside me near the doorway.
She looked confused.
“Uncle Luca?”
I crouched.
“Yes?”
“Is that Daddy?”
I nodded.
“Yes, princess.”
She studied Thomas.
Then looked at Elena.
“Mommy's crying.”
I swallowed.
“Happy tears.”
Mia frowned.
“Happy?”
I nodded.
“Sometimes.”
Thomas knelt slowly.
“Mia?”
She looked at him.
He smiled through tears.
“I'm your daddy.”
Mia hesitated.
Then reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small pink hair clip.
“Here.”
Thomas stared.
“What's this?”
“For you.”
He began crying again.
Mia looked worried.
“Did I do bad?”
Elena shook her head.
“No, sweetheart.”
Thomas smiled through tears.
“You did something wonderful.”
I stepped into the corridor.
For the first time in my life, I understood that saving someone didn't mean they owed you anything.
Elena had her husband back.
Mia had her father.
And I had helped bring them together.
That should have been enough.
But as I stood outside the hospital room, I realized something painful.
May you like
Somewhere along the way, I'd fallen in love with Elena Bennett.
And now I had to let her go.
