Chapter 11 - THE DAY VINCENT FELL

Vincent Caruso and Daniel Rourke were arrested after investigators developed evidence connecting them to the disappearances, unlawful confinement, financial misconduct, and threats.

The cases involved multiple jurisdictions and years of records.

The legal process would take time.

But their control over my organization ended.

I watched Vincent enter the courthouse surrounded by officers.

He looked older.

Smaller.

For the first time, he couldn't command a room simply by walking into it.

He saw me.

His expression hardened.

“Luca.”

I said nothing.

He smiled bitterly.

“You think you're better than me?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He laughed.

“Then what is this?”

I took a breath.

“Accountability.”

His smile disappeared.

Daniel refused to look at me.

Perhaps he was ashamed.

Perhaps he wasn't.

I no longer cared.

The investigations also exposed wrongdoing connected to my father's old business relationships.

Some records suggested Salvatore Moretti had known about financial misconduct involving Saint Agnes.

Other questions remained unresolved because key witnesses were dead or records incomplete.

I couldn't rewrite the past.

I couldn't pretend my family was innocent.

So I began cooperating with investigators where legally required and advised.

The process forced me to confront my own role.

I'd spent years benefiting from fear.

I'd ignored warning signs.

I'd allowed men like Vincent and Daniel to operate without meaningful oversight.

I hadn't ordered Matteo's disappearance.

But I'd helped create a world where men believed they could do terrible things and hide behind my name.

That truth hurt.

It needed to.

One evening, Matteo visited my office.

He stood beside the enormous mahogany desk.

The same desk Mia had climbed onto.

He looked at me.

“Still running the empire?”

I shook my head.

“Not the same way.”

He studied me.

“Good.”

I smiled faintly.

“You always hated this room.”

He looked around.

“Still do.”

I laughed.

Then he smiled.

May you like

For the first time since his rescue, he smiled without pain.

And I felt something inside me begin to heal.
