Chapter 5 - THE PRESS RELEASE THAT ERASED ME

I read the statement twelve times.
Mr. Vale and his former partner have maintained an amicable private separation. Both parties support one another's future happiness.
Former partner.
Not wife.
Not mother of his unborn children.
Former partner.
The statement made it sound as though I had quietly stepped aside.
As though I had blessed his relationship with Celia.
As though my marriage had ended long before I learned it was in danger.
Evelyn filed a formal demand for correction.
She also notified Vale Health's board that the statement was disputed.
Within hours, financial journalists began asking questions.
Had Grant been legally divorced?
Why was the company issuing statements about his personal life?
Why did the timing coincide with unusual financial activity?
Grant called Evelyn.
She put the call on speaker with my permission.
“Where is Hannah?”
“She's safe.”
“I need to speak to my wife.”
Evelyn paused.
“Then perhaps you should stop referring to her publicly as your former partner.”
Silence.
Grant exhaled.
“That statement was approved by our communications team.”
“Are you saying you didn't approve it?”
Another pause.
“I approved the general messaging.”
Evelyn looked at me.
“Then you're responsible for the message.”
Grant said nothing.
That evening, Celia appeared on a late-night interview.
She wore a white silk blouse and a diamond necklace.
The host asked about the Malibu ceremony.
Celia smiled.
“Grant and I believe in celebrating love.”
I watched from the couch.
Ben stood behind me.
The host asked whether Grant had been married before.
Celia's smile tightened.
“His previous relationship had ended privately.”
I turned off the television.
Ben cursed.
I sat very still.
Then said:
“I want to speak publicly.”
Evelyn, who had joined us for dinner, shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because once you make this public, you can't control what happens next.”
I looked at her.
“They've already made it public.”
“Yes. But you can choose when and how to respond.”
I pressed a hand against my stomach.
One baby kicked.
Then the other.
I took a breath.
“Then help me choose.”
We prepared a statement.
Short.
Factual.
No insults.
No speculation.
I confirmed that Grant and I remained legally married.
That I had not consented to the public characterization of our relationship.
That I was pregnant with twins.
And that I was prioritizing my health and my children's well-being.
Evelyn reviewed every word.
Then we released it.
Within an hour, the story changed.
Headlines shifted.

Grant Vale's Marriage Timeline Under Scrutiny.
My phone exploded.
Reporters.
Friends.
Former colleagues.
People I hadn't spoken to in years.
Some offered support.
Others wanted gossip.
I answered almost none of them.
Grant sent one message.
You humiliated me.
I stared at it.
Then typed:
You married another woman on television while I waited for you at our babies' appointment.
I paused.
Then added:
I told the truth.
I sent it.
That night, Ben brought me a cup of tea.
“You okay?”
I looked at the headlines.
“No.”
He nodded.
I continued.
“But I think I will be.”
The next morning, Evelyn arrived carrying a folder.
Her expression was serious.
“There's been a development.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“An internal Vale Health employee contacted me.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
“Someone from the finance department.”
She placed a printed email on the table.
