Chapter 4 - THE WIFE WHO VANISHED

By morning, the photographs were everywhere.

Grant kissing Celia beneath the flower arch.

Grant holding her waist.

Celia lifting her bouquet.

Entertainment websites called it the wedding of the season.

Financial reporters called it an unusual publicity move.

A few articles mentioned that Grant had previously been married.

None mentioned me by name.

I wondered whether that omission had been arranged.

Evelyn helped me establish a safe plan.

I wasn't disappearing from the law.

I wasn't hiding the children from a court.

I was simply refusing to remain accessible to people who had threatened me.

I moved to a furnished apartment outside Boston, near Ben and a hospital equipped to manage a high-risk twin pregnancy.

My new obstetrician reviewed my records.

She confirmed both babies were developing appropriately but emphasized the importance of regular monitoring.

I promised to attend every appointment.

I had already learned what happened when promises became optional.

For three days, Grant called repeatedly.

I didn't answer.

Then he sent an email.

Hannah, the Malibu ceremony was not a legally registered marriage. It was a private commitment event connected to an investment announcement. Celia and I have been involved, and I know I owe you an explanation. But you need to understand the company is facing an emergency.

I read it twice.

He had finally admitted the affair.

Not because he wanted to be honest.

Because the evidence was on television.

Evelyn advised me to preserve the email.

Then she drafted a response.

I am safe and receiving appropriate medical care. Please communicate through my attorney regarding financial or legal matters. I will address future parental arrangements through counsel. Do not contact my medical providers without my authorization.

I approved it.

Grant replied within four minutes.

You're making this worse.

I stared.

Worse.

I was carrying his twins.

He had publicly exchanged vows with another woman.

My inheritance had been used in suspicious transfers.

And somehow I was making things worse.

The following week, a courier delivered a package to Evelyn's office.

Inside was a letter from Grant.

He said he loved me.

He said Celia meant nothing.

He said the ceremony had been necessary to secure a partnership.

He said investors had demanded a public commitment.

Evelyn read it.

Then looked at me.

“Investors don't normally require a CEO to pretend to marry an actress.”

I almost laughed.

“Apparently these ones did.”

She didn't smile.

“There's another possibility.”

“What?”

“That the ceremony was designed to change the public narrative before financial information became public.”

I looked down.

“Make Grant look powerful?”

“Or make someone else look indispensable.”

That evening, Ben found me sitting on the balcony.

“You okay?”

I watched the trees move in the wind.

“No.”

He sat beside me.

I continued.

“I keep thinking about the appointment.”

“The ultrasound?”

I nodded.

“He promised to be there.”

Ben said nothing.

“I wasn't asking him to save the world. I just wanted him to sit beside me while we looked at our children.”

My voice broke.

Ben put his arm around me.

“You deserved that.”

Two weeks later, Evelyn called with news.

“The company has issued a statement.”

I closed my eyes.

“What does it say?”

“That you and Grant have been privately separated for more than a year.”

I stared.

“What?”

She continued.

“And that you approved his new relationship.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“That's a lie.”

“I know.”

I stood.

“Who authorized it?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Grant's communications office.”

I looked toward the window.

For weeks, I'd been trying to understand whether my husband had abandoned me.

Now I had my answer.

He wasn't merely leaving.

He was rewriting our marriage so the world would never know what he'd done.
