Chapter 12 - THE GIRL WHO CHOSE HER OWN FUTURE

Harper graduated from nursing school the following spring.
She stood in a crowded auditorium wearing a navy gown.
Her cap kept slipping.
Her shoes hurt.
Her heart felt too full.
In the audience sat Nicholas.
Gabriel.
Rosa.
Marco.
And several friends from school.
Nicholas cried before the ceremony even began.
Gabriel handed him a tissue.
Nicholas glared.
“Don't start.”
Gabriel smiled.
“You're crying.”
“So are you.”
Gabriel looked away.
When Harper's name was called, she walked across the stage.
Accepted her diploma.
Shook hands.
Smiled for the photograph.
Then looked toward the audience.
Nicholas stood.
Gabriel stood beside him.
Both applauded.
Harper began crying.
Afterward, they celebrated at a small restaurant.
No luxury ballroom.
No private security.
Just family and friends.
Nicholas raised a glass.
“To Harper.”
She laughed.
“Dad—”
He stopped.
The table went silent.
Harper realized what she'd said.
Dad.
Nicholas stared at her.
His eyes filled.
She smiled through tears.
“Yeah,” she whispered. “Dad.”
Nicholas began crying.
Gabriel looked down.
Rosa wiped her eyes.
Nicholas stood.
He wrapped his arms around Harper.
“I love you,” he whispered.
She held him tightly.
“I love you too.”
That evening, Harper received a job offer from a children's hospital.
She had applied months earlier.
The position was in pediatric nursing.
Her dream.
She stared at the email.
Then screamed.
Nicholas rushed into the room.
“What happened?”
She held up the phone.
“I got it!”
He laughed.
Gabriel appeared behind him.
“What?”
“The hospital!”
Gabriel grinned.
“I knew it.”
Harper laughed.
“You did not.”
“I had confidence.”
They celebrated with ice cream.
Harper sat between the two brothers.
For a moment, she thought about her mother.
How proud Elena would have been.
How much she had sacrificed.
Later, Harper visited her mother's grave.
She placed fresh flowers beside the stone.
“Hi, Mom.”
The wind moved through the trees.
She sat down.
“I found him.”
Her voice trembled.
“Dad.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“He's not perfect.”
She laughed softly.
“Neither am I.”
She looked at the photograph she had brought.
Nicholas.
Gabriel.
Rosa.
All smiling around a kitchen table.
“I think you'd like seeing us together.”
She wiped her eyes.
“And I think you'd be happy that I'm becoming a nurse.”
She stayed until sunset.
Then stood.
“I'm okay, Mom.”
May you like
She smiled through tears.
“I'm really okay.”
