Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO WAIT

Dante Gallo had never been patient.

He was accustomed to decisions.

Orders.

Immediate results.

But Nora changed that.

He didn't pursue her while she was rebuilding her life.

He didn't use money to impress her.

He didn't ask her to abandon her independence.

Instead, he showed up.

He attended her graduation.

Brought coffee during exam weeks.

Helped Agata move into a new apartment.

And occasionally cooked terrible pasta that Nora pretended to enjoy.

One evening, they walked along the Chicago River.

The city lights reflected in the water.

Dante looked at her.

“Can I ask you something?”

Nora smiled.

“You usually do.”

He laughed.

“Would you have dinner with me?”

She looked at him.

“We have dinner all the time.”

“Not like this.”

Her smile faded slightly.

Dante continued.

“Not because of family. Not because of investigations. Not because someone needs protecting.”

He took a breath.

“Just you and me.”

Nora studied him.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

Their first date was at a small neighborhood restaurant.

No bodyguards at the table.

No private room.

No expensive wine.

Just two people learning about each other.

Dante told her about his childhood.

His mistakes.

His regrets.

And his desire to change the parts of his life that had hurt people.

Nora listened.

Then told him about her dreams.

A career helping families.

A home filled with laughter.

A life where she didn't have to be afraid of powerful men.

Dante looked at her.

“I can't promise my past will disappear.”

Nora nodded.

“I know.”

“But I can promise to be honest about it.”

She smiled.

“That's a good place to start.”

Months later, Dante began separating his legitimate businesses from the criminal operations that had shaped his family's reputation.

He worked with attorneys.

Independent auditors.

And regulators.

It was slow.

Difficult.

And costly.

But Nora noticed the difference.

Not in his bank account.

In the way he treated people.

He listened more.

Threatened less.

And learned that being respected was not the same thing as being feared.

One evening, Salvatore watched Dante and Nora laughing in the restaurant kitchen.

He turned toward Agata.

“Your daughter changed him.”

Agata smiled.

“No, Papa.”

May you like

She looked at Dante.

“He decided to change.”
