Chapter 12 - THE DAY SALVATORE GALLO LOST HIS POWER

The investigation expanded.

Federal authorities reviewed the shipping records.

Financial transactions.

Witness statements.

And the evidence recovered from Pietro's workshop.

Several former associates of Salvatore agreed to cooperate.

Their testimony helped establish a broader picture of the criminal organization.

Salvatore was eventually charged in connection with financial crimes and other alleged offenses.

The investigation into my parents' deaths was reopened.

I testified about the documents Pietro had preserved.

I explained how I'd found them.

How he'd raised me.

And what he'd told me about Sicily.

Dante also cooperated.

He provided records from legitimate businesses and information about his father's activities.

The process wasn't easy.

It affected his family.

His reputation.

His future.

But he continued.

One afternoon, after a court hearing, Salvatore looked at me across the hallway.

For a moment, I saw the man who had frightened me at La Cattedrale.

Then he spoke in Sicilian.

"Your grandfather should have kept his mouth shut."

I looked at him.

My hands trembled.

But my voice didn't.

"He taught me to speak."

Salvatore stared.

I continued.

"And he taught me not to be ashamed of the truth."

Dante stood beside me.

He didn't speak for me.

He didn't pull me away.

He simply remained there.

For the first time, I understood that being protected didn't have to mean being controlled.

Eventually, Salvatore was convicted of several financial crimes.

Other investigations continued.

The truth about my parents' deaths was still being examined.

But the evidence Pietro had hidden was no longer buried.

And neither was my voice.
