Chapter 10 - THE DAY MARIS LOST HER POWER

The legal proceedings began four months later.

Maris Williams arrived at the courthouse wearing a tailored cream suit.

Her pearls were gone.

Her expression remained proud.

But the cameras outside told a different story.

Reporters asked about the missing family support funds.

The forged divorce documents.

The Santa Elena compensation accounts.

Maris refused to answer.

Inside, the court reviewed evidence gathered through the audit.

Bank records.

Correspondence.

Trust documents.

Witness statements.

Brian Smith testified.

So did Leonard Price.

Catherine provided the original documents she'd hidden in her sewing box.

Victor testified about the monthly transfers.

He described believing the money was reaching his daughter.

Then he described finding Annie behind the hotel.

His voice broke.

“She was hungry.”

The courtroom fell silent.

He continued.

“She was carrying discarded bread because she thought her mother needed food.”

Maris looked down.

Victor stared at her.

“For three years, I believed I was providing for my family.”

His eyes filled.

“But the money never reached them.”

The proceedings continued.

Maris's attorneys challenged the evidence.

They questioned witnesses.

They argued about control of the trusts.

But the records were extensive.

The case exposed a pattern of financial manipulation and forged communications.

Maris had used her position to isolate Catherine.

She had diverted money.

She had helped create false documents suggesting Catherine wanted a divorce.

And she had concealed the truth from Victor.

The court ordered restrictions on several accounts while the financial claims proceeded.

Separate investigations continued into the Santa Elena project.

Maris left the courthouse without speaking to reporters.

Victor watched from the steps.

For years, he'd believed his mother was the strongest person he knew.

Now he saw something else.

A woman who had confused control with love.

A woman who had hurt the people she claimed to protect.

Catherine stood beside him.

“Are you all right?”

Victor looked at her.

“I don't know.”

She nodded.

He took a breath.

“She's still my mother.”

Catherine looked toward the courthouse.

“I know.”

He stared.

“I don't know what to do with that.”

She considered his words.

“Maybe you don't have to decide today.”

Victor looked at her.

She smiled sadly.

“Some things take time.”

He nodded.

Then looked toward Annie, who was waiting with Brian's wife nearby.

His daughter waved.

Victor waved back.

For the first time, he understood that loving his mother didn't mean excusing her actions.

And protecting his family didn't mean hiding the truth.

It meant facing it.
