Chapter 8 - EVAN’S PLEA

The criminal cases did not resolve dramatically.

No surprise witness in a courtroom.

No last-minute confession.

Evidence accumulated.

Kara cooperated.

Diane cooperated.

Bank records were strong.

Digital records stronger.

Eventually Evan accepted a plea agreement covering offenses from the financial scheme and the assault case.

The sentence was substantial.

Long enough that Noah would be much older before ordinary contact could even be reconsidered.

At the sentencing hearing, Evan looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I waited.

Then:

“I was under pressure.”

There it was.

The apology with a door attached.

He continued:

“I never meant to hurt Noah.”

I believed that.

Maybe.

Then he said:

“Lena knows I loved them.”

Loved.

Past tense.

Possessive tense.

I spoke only briefly.

“I am not asking the court to punish Evan because I hate him.”

He looked up.

“I am asking that what happened be described accurately.”

Then:

“He did not lose control of our family in one night.”

I breathed.

“He spent years trying to maintain control of it.”

The judge sentenced him.

I did not feel victorious.

Outside, reporters waited because the freight-investment fraud involved multiple local victims.

I walked past.

Dad asked:

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to go home?”

“Yes.”

We picked Noah up from school.

He had made a paper fish.

That became the most important event of the day.
