Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Reckoning at St. Victoria

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, the executive boardroom on the tenth floor of St. Victoria Medical Center was filled with the hospital’s board of trustees, legal counsel, and representatives from the State Attorney General’s Office.

Sitting at the head of the long mahogany table, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer over my surgical scrubs, was me.

Daniel sat beside me as the Reynolds family representative, holding his father's formal revocation of power of attorney.

Julian Hayes, the CEO of St. Victoria, adjusted his glasses and clicked through the presentation slides on the wall display.

“Pursuant to the emergency forensic audit initiated by Dr. Emily Carter under the Hospital Ethics and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act,” Julian announced, “all corporate assets tied to Bradley Reynolds have been frozen under federal injunction.”

The corporate attorney for the Reynolds family laid out the final recovery decree:

The $4.2 million in siphoned funds was recovered from the offshore holding escrow before the transfer cleared.

Bradley Reynolds was formally terminated from all executive positions within the Reynolds family businesses with cause.

Criminal charges for Wire Fraud, Grand Larceny, and Exploitation of a Medically Vulnerable Adult were formally lodged with the Cook County State's Attorney.

Bradley sat at the far end of the table in silence, weeping into his hands as two county sheriff’s deputies stepped forward, clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, and led him out through the boardroom double doors.

Daniel turned to me in the quiet room, his eyes shining with awe and deep, unbreakable devotion.

“You saved my father’s life in the morning,” Daniel whispered, taking my hand across the table. “And you saved his life’s work in the afternoon.”

“I’m just a practical nurse, Daniel,” I teased softly, a warm smile breaking across my face.

Daniel laughed through tears of relief, pulling me into a fierce, passionate embrace right in front of the entire hospital board of directors.
