Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE TO LOSE POWER

Matteo made his decision the following morning.
He called his attorneys.
His compliance officers.
His independent directors.
And the federal investigators already examining the shipment.
He agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
He authorized a full audit of the shipping companies.
He removed Lorenzo from operational control pending the investigation.
And he began separating legitimate businesses from the criminal networks that had attached themselves to his family's name.
The process was ugly.
Employees were questioned.
Contracts were reviewed.
Some business partners disappeared.
Others threatened lawsuits.
A few threatened worse.
Matteo did not pretend the consequences would be easy.
He knew he might lose money.
Influence.
Protection.
Even his freedom, depending on what investigators uncovered about his own past conduct.
But for the first time, he stopped treating control as the only possible form of safety.
One evening, Gabriel found him sitting alone in his office.
“Was this because of the girl?”
Matteo looked up.
Then signed:
No.
Gabriel frowned.
Matteo continued.
She helped me see it.
He paused.
But the decision is mine.
Meanwhile, Isla accepted a temporary position at the community center.
She helped coordinate accessibility workshops.
Assisted families learning sign language.
And began studying for certification as a professional interpreter.
The work paid less than restaurant service.
But she loved it.
For the first time in years, she came home tired in a way that felt meaningful.
Cole noticed the change.
You're smiling again.
She laughed.
Am I?
Yes.
He paused.
But you miss him.
Isla looked away.
Cole touched her shoulder.
You can miss someone and still have boundaries.
She nodded.
I know.
That night, Isla received a message from Matteo.
I won't ask you to come back while I'm still sorting out my life.
But I wanted you to know I listened.
She read it three times.
May you like
Then replied:
Keep listening.
