Chapter 1 - THE BABY WHO COULDN'T CRY

"Three weeks after I buried my premature daughter, the most feared mafia boss in the Lower East Side put his almost-lifeless son in my arms. Under the dim lights of my bakery, Adrian Vale pleaded in a whisper: ""Please. Feed him once. I'll pay whatever it takes."" And neither of us understood how much that moment of desperation would cost us. My name is Hannah Brooks, and my bakery was about to close for good when Adrian arrived. Three SUVs black waited outside. Armed men guarded the street, but I barely noticed them, because the tiny baby resting on Adrian's chest was too weak to cry. Three weeks earlier, my daughter Grace had lived for seventeen hours. My body was still producing milk for a child I could no longer hold. — Give him some. Adrian hesitated. Then his son did a barely audible sound, and one of the most dangerous men in New York City handed over the most precious thing he had. I took the baby to my small office, in the back. — What's his name? — Lucas. A pediatrician arrived right behind us. — It's been almost three days without a real feed — explained the doctor. — He refuses all bottles. I touched the baby's cheek. — Let's go, my love. Just try. For a few terrifying seconds, nothing happened. Then Lucas took the breast pump. The rhythm of his sucking filled the room. His tiny hand clenched my woolen shirt, tears streaming down my face, and the color slowly returning to his cheeks. When I looked at the door, Adrian was also crying. Silently. Twenty minutes later, Lucas fell asleep on me. — The immediate danger is over — said the doctor. — But he'll need regular feeds. After everyone left, Adrian offered me a deal. A private suite at his estate on Long Island. Medical supervision. Protection. All the debts from the bakery paid off. — Twenty-five thousand dollars a week. I stared at him. — I'll go. But it's not for the money. — Then tell me the price. — I don't have one. — Everyone has a price. — Maybe everyone in your world. His eyes hardened. I looked at Lucas. — I spent three weeks wondering if there was anything I could have done for my daughter. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life wondering the same thing about your son. Two hours later, I entered the Vale estate. It was no longer a mansion, but another fortress. Adrian's wife, Isabel, had died soon after the birth of Lucas, and her absence hung over every room. The staff snooped around, the security guards lived on coffee and packaged food, and no one touched anything that belonged to her. For two days, I barely left Lucas' side. He was growing stronger, little by little. Every time I tried to move, he would yell, his tiny body stiffening with violence in my arms. — Lucas? Adrian came towards us. The doctor's team came running. That's when I saw something on Lucas' lips. A faint reddish residue. My blood froze. — What did he take this morning? — the doctor demanded. — Nothing, just my milk. Adrian stood completely still. His eyes went to the water bottle beside me. Then, even the kitchen staff. The grieving father disappeared. The mafia boss returned. — Stay put — Adrian ordered. All the security guards drew their weapons. — No one leaves this house. I pressed Lucas against my chest as Dr. Bennett grabbed the bottle of water. Adrian looked around the kitchen, his eyes bloodshot. Someone from the Vale family had just tried to poison his baby. And I was the one holding him when it happened.
